Project acronym: BioCog

Project full title: "Biomarker Development for Postoperative
Cognitive Impairment in the Elderly"

Overall strategy

brain

Neuroimaging biomarkers are expected to allow the detection of relevant aspects of POD/POCD pathophysiology with high sensitivity. Molecular biomarkers promise high specificity when the aim to capture molecular changes in the central nervous system.

The development of an expert system based on neuroimaging and molecular biomarkers requires complementary expertise: clinical (WP1), neuroimaging biomarker (WP2) and molecular biomarker (WP3). For meaningful integration and interpretation of data from multiple domains, powerful computational tools are needed. In this regard, the bioinformatic work package (WP4) as well as the participation by researchers from WP2 and WP3 with extensive experience in the application of bioinformatics is critical. Appropriate integration of sufficiently specific and sensitive biomarkers needs to be based on rigorous statistical procedures.

Efficient project management, in synergy with the scientific and business coordination objectives, is a central task within the project,. The emphasis lies on strategic planning, development of project results and outcomes, administration/handling financial issues and coordination of the work package activities to achieve the common scientific and business goals.

Dissemination and exploitation strategies have an important role in the BioCog project. It will ensure the proper visibility of / exposure for the project and will provide long term sustainability. Strategies will be included to target future stakeholders such as the European Commission, clinicians, the academic community, biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
